Biography

Mezzo-soprano Megan Elizabeth Morris (that’s me!) was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1981 into a profoundly musical family. Her roots are in Wales and Bavaria (to name only a few), with the Welsh side of her family very much involved in Welsh organizations such as the Druid Society and National Gymanfa Ganu Association. When she was young she sang in many choirs and play productions, played percussion in elementary orchestras during her schooling and more often than not, performed for family gatherings at home.

During the course of Megan’s vocal performance education she performed in many operas and musical productions, most notably Xerxes as Amastre, Madama Butterfly as Suzuki, and The Old Maid and the Thief as Miss Todd, the title role. She also participated in concert opera with the newly organized Valley Lyric Opera based in Greenville, Pennsylvania, including a concert rendering of Madama Butterfly during her second year. She has been delighted to have many opportunities to perform in the Youngstown area, thanks to productions supported by the Youngstown Opera Guild, Valley Lyric Opera, and various Gymanfa Ganu Associations, among others.

In April of 2004 she appeared as Hansel in the Dana School of Music’s staged production of Hansel and Gretel. She spent some very special time with The Wade Raridon Singers of Youngstown, and has often been a featured soloist with various groups including Jon Simsic’s Seraphim, as well as the annual Gymanfa Ganu gatherings and St. David’s Day celebrations in Niles and Youngstown, respectively.

Megan’s day job is her other love – a graphic design and illustration studio which she runs herself and enjoys beyond a shadow of a doubt. She has far too many websites, including this one, a MySpace page, her personal blog, of course her studio site, and various other projects she has a hand in. She has far too much fun and promises to cut down in the future – but she’s lying. ;}

In the Fall of 2005 Megan won first place at the David G. Morris Semi-Professional Competition in Orlando, Florida during the North American Festival of Wales, which sent her on to the National Eisteddfod in Swansea, Wales, where she succeeded in the preliminaries and won second place in the Over 25 Mezzo-Soprano stage competition in the main pavilion.

For now, Megan continues to perform, and plans to stay in Austin while she continues to work on music and design, though she still visits Ohio’s Youngstown area regularly for family visits and occasional performances.
